Frame yourself. Never block your content.
InsetCam keeps a small picture-in-picture of your camera on top of your screen, so you can frame yourself and move out of the way while you record or go live. What you see is what your viewers see.

Frame yourself, never your content
Shape a small camera window around the recording or stream you are making.
Frame
A camera window that stays out of the way
InsetCam floats an always-on-top picture-in-picture of your camera on the screen. Drag it anywhere, resize it to taste, and when you need the full view, hide it with one click — then bring it back in the same spot.

Aspect
Match your shot to your frame
Keep the picture in its original ratio or switch to 16:9, 4:3, or 1:1 video. Choose fit to see the whole shot, or fill to crop in closer — whatever keeps you looking right for the format you are recording.

Output
Look the way your viewers see you
Flip a mirrored preview, soften the window with rounded corners, and let the camera quality match itself automatically. Position, size, and settings are remembered for next time.

Under the hood
Live, local, and open
A native macOS camera overlay that treats your recordings as yours.
Native
Swift for macOS
A focused, native app built with Swift. No hidden browser engine and no always-on helper draining your battery.
Live
camera, locally
Camera frames are processed on your Mac in real time. InsetCam only previews — the recording is your recorder's job.
0
recorded or uploaded
No screen recording, no clips, no network round-trip. The camera feed never leaves your Mac.

And everything else that matters
From the launch to the look of your overlay.
Screen recording
Record a demo or lesson while your camera floats beside the content — frame yourself, then move aside instead of covering it up.
Live streaming
Give your stream a real presenter camera window your broadcasting software picks up, without eating the part of the screen you care about.
Aspect presets
Original ratio for the raw camera, or 16:9, 4:3, and 1:1 for the format you are producing in — plus free-form when you want to eyeball it.
Fill or fit
Fit the whole camera view inside the window or fill the window by cropping in. The look you tune is the look you record.
Mirror & rounded corners
Preview yourself the way you are used to, and round the window's corners so it blends into your scene instead of shouting over it.
Never blocks your content
Move, resize, or quick-hide the overlay any time. What you see is what your viewers see — nothing is covered up underneath.
Comparison
A camera preview that never records
Webcam sites and online recorders often capture your screen or camera on their side, and keep it behind an account. InsetCam is only a live overlay — it records nothing, uploads nothing, and the actual recording is done by the software you already use.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What InsetCam is for, what it does with your camera, and what it needs to run.
What is InsetCam for?
Recording your screen or going live: InsetCam keeps a small picture-in-picture of your camera on top of the screen, so you can frame yourself and move out of the way while you present — without ever covering the content underneath. InsetCam itself does not record or stream; it pairs with the recorder or streaming software you already use.
Does InsetCam record or upload my screen or camera?
No. InsetCam only shows a live preview of your camera on your own Mac. It does not record, stream, or upload anything, and it has no server. The actual recording or live stream is done by your screen recorder or streaming software, which captures InsetCam's window together with the rest of your screen.
Why does the preview look mirrored? Can I change that?
A preview you look at while talking to camera is often shown mirrored so it matches what you expect in a mirror. Flip the Mirror option off if you want the preview the way your viewers see it, and round the corners to taste — tune it until you look the way you want before you start.
What happens if the camera window covers something?
You can drag or resize the picture-in-picture at any time, or quick-hide it when you need the full screen. Its position, size, and settings are remembered, so it comes back where you left it next time.
What are the system requirements?
macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon (M1 or later). The current build is Apple Silicon only. The build is Developer ID signed, Apple-notarized, and stapled, so first launch works without special Gatekeeper settings.
Which camera does InsetCam use?
The current version picks your built-in front camera when one is available, and falls back to the system default camera otherwise. Switching between cameras is planned for a future release.
How much does InsetCam cost?
InsetCam is free and open source under the MIT License. There is no paid tier and no trial clock.
How is InsetCam related to SameShot?
InsetCam is an independent, MIT-licensed fork of SameShot by JackAIStudio. It uses its own name, icon, and brand, and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the original project or its author. MIT-licensed open source. InsetCam is an independent fork of SameShot by JackAIStudio. — binaries are published on GitHub.
Where can I report a bug or ask a question?
Open an issue on GitHub. Issues are read and answered, and release notes for every version are published there too.
